Phonics Story /æt/ The Rat and the Cat

Once upon a time, there was a rat who lived in a big house. The rat was very happy, because he had plenty of food to eat. One day, the rat was eating a big piece of cheese when he saw a cat. The cat was very hungry, and he wanted to eat the rat.

The rat was very scared. He ran away from the cat, but the cat was faster. The rat ran into a hole in the wall, and the cat waited outside the hole.

The rat was trapped in the hole. He was very hungry and very thirsty. He didn't know what to do.

After a while, the rat heard a noise. He looked out of the hole and saw a little girl. The little girl was very kind. She saw the rat and she felt sorry for him.

The little girl gave the rat some food and water. The rat was very happy. He ate and drank until he was full.

The little girl told the rat that he could stay in the hole as long as he wanted. The rat was very grateful. He thanked the little girl and he went back to sleep.

The next day, the rat was very happy. He had a new friend, and he had a safe place to live. The rat and the little girl became very good friends. They played together every day.

One day, the cat was back. He was still hungry, and he wanted to eat the rat. The cat waited outside the hole, but the rat didn't come out.

The little girl saw the cat. She knew that the cat was waiting for the rat. The little girl didn't want the cat to eat the rat, so she had an idea.

The little girl went outside and she talked to the cat. She told the cat that the rat was her friend, and that she didn't want the cat to eat him.

The cat was surprised. He had never met a human who was friends with a rat before. The cat thought about it for a moment, and then he agreed to leave the rat alone.

The little girl was very happy. She thanked the cat, and she went back inside to play with her rat friend.

The rat and the little girl continued to be friends for many years. They were both very happy, and they lived happily ever after.
